Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana could miss the remainder of the season after suffering a serious hamstring injury, manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed.

Softfootball reports the French centre-back’s injury is significantly worse than initially feared, dealing a major blow to Chelsea’s hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Fofana sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in early December and was originally expected to be sidelined for around a month. However, further medical assessments have revealed a more severe problem, leaving the club uncertain over when the 24-year-old will return to action.

Providing an update ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Crystal Palace, Maresca admitted the defender faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Unfortunately, Wes will be out for a very long time. He doesn’t need surgery at the moment, but he could be out for the season. The injury is worse than we first thought,

the Italian said.

Fofana has been one of Chelsea’s standout performers whenever fit this season, but injuries have continued to disrupt his career since arriving from Leicester City in 2022. Softfootball understands the Blues will now rely on their remaining defensive options as they push to secure UEFA Champions League qualification.
