Softfootball understands that Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has offered a strong endorsement of Kobbie Mainoo, describing the young midfielder as a prime example of the kind of homegrown talent that defines Manchester United’s identity.
Speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, Carrick underlined the importance of youth development and academy graduates to the club’s long-term vision. As reported by Fabrizio Romano via his official X account.

He said:
Michael Carrick on Kobbie Mainoo: This club needs young players coming through. They’re the FOUNDATION of the club. You’ve seen last week what Kobbie can bring! I started working with Kobbie when he was 13 or 14 years old when I was doing my badges.
Carrick, who previously served as caretaker manager in 2021, stressed that building around academy players is not driven by sentiment alone. Instead, he sees it as fundamental to sustaining United’s culture and competitive future.
He pointed to Mainoo’s rapid rise and calmness in high-pressure situations as clear proof of his quality, both technically and mentally.

The interim boss also revealed a long-standing personal connection with the 20-year-old, having first worked with Mainoo when he was just 13 or 14 years old while Carrick was completing his coaching badges. That early exposure has only strengthened his belief in the midfielder’s potential.
After being largely sidelined under former manager Ruben Amorim, who handed Mainoo just one Premier League start this season, the youngster has been reintegrated following Amorim’s departure.

Carrick handed Mainoo a league start in the Manchester derby, where Manchester United secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Manchester City.
That display earned widespread praise. Carrick also highlighted Mainoo’s partnership with Casemiro, who is set to leave Manchester United at the end of the season, describing the midfield pairing as a strong foundation for the win.
Carrick’s backing, echoing sentiments previously shared by Sir Alex Ferguson, signals a renewed institutional commitment to youth, with Mainoo increasingly central to United’s tactical plans.
