Bayern Munich weighs new contract for Serge Gnabry amid wage-cut talks

Softfootball reports that Serge Gnabry could be staying longer at Bayern Munich, with the club now open to extending his deal beyond 2026, but there is a catch, and it’s only if he agrees to a major pay cut. As revealed by Florian Plettenberg in a post made on his official X handle, the 30-year-old winger, who currently earns close to €18.87 million gross per year, might need to take his salary down to around €5 million to secure a new deal.

Plettenberg revealed:

FC Bayern can genuinely imagine extending Serge Gnabry’s contract beyond 2026. But no final decision yet. Max Eberl had already been impressed by his attitude and fitness in the summer of 2024, and he is currently a regular starter. However, the 30 y/o winger would have to accept a reduction in wages. In a perfect season, he earns up to €18 million gross per year.

Despite the financial adjustment on the table, Gnabry’s recent form has given Bayern something to think about. Under Vicente Kompany, he’s looked sharp and hungry again. In the 3–0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, he provided an assist and created two key chances before coming off after 71 minutes. A few days later, he found the net for Germany in their 4–0 win against Luxembourg, a reminder of his natural finishing touch.

Back in Bundesliga action, Gnabry continued his fine run, scoring in Bayern’s 4–1 triumph over Hoffenheim. Across six league games so far (five starts), he’s managed 3 goals and 3 assists, along with 14 shots on goal and 35 successful tackles, showing he’s not just attacking but also working hard defensively.

Both sporting directors, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, are said to be impressed with his professionalism and versatility. With Jamal Musiala currently out injured, Gnabry has slotted seamlessly into the attacking midfield role, keeping Bayern’s front line ticking.

The question now is whether he’ll agree to the lower wage. At 30, Gnabry still has plenty to offer and Bayern know keeping him might be worth every euro saved.
