Bayer Leverkusen step up pursuit of Ezequiel Fernández after personal agreement

Bayer Leverkusenare closing in on signing Argentine midfielder Ezequiel Fernández after reaching an agreement on personal terms. Softfootball understands that the Bundesliga champions are now in negotiations with Al Qadsiah, with the Saudi club reportedly demanding around €25m.

Fernández, 23, has been on the radar of several European clubs this summer. Just a few weeks ago, he appeared close to joining Real Sociedad, only for that deal to collapse when the Spanish side balked at Al Qadsiah’s asking price.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, quoted a post on his official X account where he earlier reported updates on the situation, suggesting that the move is now getting closer.

He posted:

“Bayer Leverkusen consider move for Al Qadsiah midfielder Equi Fernández.

“He’s on the shortlist as option in midfield after Real Sociedad move collapsed with Leverkusen keen on Equi.

“No decision made yet on new midfielder but Equi is appreciated.”

For Leverkusen, Fernández represents a long-term option in midfield, particularly as a potential successor to Granit Xhaka and a dynamic partner for Exequiel Palacios.

Scouts have been impressed by his energy, pressing ability, and technique, qualities that made him a standout performer in Saudi Arabia last season, where he featured in 37 league matches, scoring once and adding four assists.

The player’s profile has also caught the attention of clubs like Marseille and Porto, though neither has pushed as strongly as Leverkusen. According to Fabrizio Romano and other sources, the German side are confident they can close the deal, even if negotiations over the fee remain delicate.

For Al Qadsiah, who signed Fernández from Boca Juniors in 2024, any sale would bring in a major profit. Still, insiders at the club have suggested they are in no rush to sell unless their valuation is met, making the next round of talks crucial.

Bayer Leverkusen has been a very busy side in this transfer window. They recently saw the transfer of Victor Boniface to AC Milan fail due to medicals, and as things stand, Leverkusen look to be in pole position. If the two sides can agree on numbers, with reports suggesting they are close, Fernández could arrive in Germany before the end of the window and add another piece to Xabi Alonso’s growing squad.
