Barcelona are laying early groundwork to replace their veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez reportedly top of their wish list for 2026.
Despite concerns about his age at the time of signing in 2022, Lewandowski has proven to be a key figure at Camp Nou. The Polish forward has delivered 101 goals in 147 matches and helped secure five major trophies, including two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey.
Now 36, Lewandowski is approaching the twilight of his career. According to Sport, Barcelona are looking ahead, and Julian Alvarez has emerged as the preferred long-term replacement. The Argentine forward joined Atletico Madrid less than a year ago, but his performances have been eye-catching.

In the 2024–25 season alone, Alvarez netted 24 goals across domestic and European competitions, making his £82 million transfer fee look like smart business. Although Atletico are unlikely to part ways with him any time soon, Barcelona are monitoring his progress closely.
While stylistically different from Lewandowski, Alvarez offers versatility and mobility that could appeal to manager Hansi Flick’s evolving tactical vision. The 25-year-old can also play deeper roles, potentially giving Barcelona more attacking fluidity going forward.
Club president Joan Laporta is believed to be in favour of an eventual move for Alvarez. Whether a transfer materializes may depend on Atletico’s competitiveness in La Liga and Alvarez’s openness to a move if Barcelona’s interest becomes official.
