Barcelona’s hopes of signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams are under threat, with Bayern Munich making a final push to hijack the deal. Despite strong indications that the 22-year-old is set to join the Catalan giants, Bayern have launched a last-minute contract offer worth €12 million (£10.3 million) per year in an attempt to lure him to the Allianz Arena.
Williams has long been linked with a move to Barcelona, where he’s expected to link up with Spanish international teammate and friend Lamine Yamal. Talks between Barça and Bilbao are ongoing, and while the La Liga champions haven’t officially finalized the move, all parties appear to be progressing toward a conclusion.
Bayern’s urgency stems from Leroy Sane’s impending departure to Galatasaray, leaving a gap on the flanks. Their failure to land Florian Wirtz earlier this summer added to their desperation for top-tier attacking reinforcements. With Williams’ €58 million (£49m) release clause still intact, the Bavarians are holding out hope that Barcelona’s financial limitations or registration constraints could delay or derail the move.

However, reports suggest Williams is not engaging with Bayern at this point, waiting instead for Barcelona and Athletic to seal the deal. Sporting director Deco recently confirmed the club is actively working to wrap up negotiations for the in-demand winger, who scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 45 appearances last season.
Meanwhile, Bayern are reportedly considering Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli as a backup option. The Brazilian faces fresh competition at the Emirates, and although he’s under contract until 2027, internal discussions have taken place regarding his future.
For now, all eyes are on Barcelona to complete their move swiftly — before Bayern Munich’s offer tempts Williams to consider a late U-turn.
