Barcelona confirm new deal agreed for Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona have officially confirmed that Frenkie de Jong will sign his new long-term contract on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2029. This is good news after a series of sad news in the Barcelona camp, especially with the recent report by Softfootball on Robert Lewandowski’s injury.

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano in a tweet via his official X account the Dutch midfielder, 28, has agreed to put pen to paper after weeks of talks and some quiet back-and-forths between his camp and the club. All documents were completed earlier this week, and the signing ceremony is set to take place at Ciutat Esportiva with president Joan Laporta present tomorrow.

Barcelona confirm new deal agreed for Frenkie de Jong as formal act will take place tomorrow. New contract valid until June 2029.

The new deal will keep De Jong on his current salary through the end of the 2025/26 season, before new financial terms kick in from July 2026. His release clause, now bumped up from €400 million to €500 million, pretty much shows how important he remains to Barcelona’s long-term plans under Hansi Flick.

Sporting director Deco described him as a fundamental player for the project, stressing that despite the club’s financial squeeze, keeping core players like De Jong is non-negotiable, especially with his recent performances even helping the Netherlands to a 4-nil victory over Finland.

De Jong has been crucial in Flick’s setup this season, forming a sharp midfield link with Pedri. His renewal was seen as a top priority, especially with his previous contract winding down and speculation building all summer.

The extension reportedly includes a base salary adjustment slightly reduced to around €12 million per season — a change that helps Barcelona manage its books better. His previous deal, signed during the pandemic, had deferred wages that were starting to weigh heavily on the club’s payroll.

De Jong was one of the senior players who helped the club through that period by restructuring his pay. But as those deferred sums began to build up, Barcelona even considered selling him in 2022. Manchester United were very keen then, but the midfielder made it clear he wanted to stay.

Since joining from Ajax in 2019 for around €75 million, De Jong has made over 250 appearances and lifted six major trophies, including two La Liga titles. Now, with the new contract secured and his future settled, he’s set to continue anchoring the Blaugrana midfield for years to come.
