Barcelona closing in on Nico Williams after Deco confirms winger priority

Nico Williams

The Spain international had previously opted to stay at San Mames last year despite interest from Barcelona. However, his impressive showings at Euro 2024 have reignited Blaugrana’s interest. Clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich were monitoring the winger, but Barcelona now seem to be in pole position.

The club is seeking to balance both performance and value, with Deco revealing that the depth on the flanks is thin. “When we’re without Lamine Yamal or Raphinha, the team drops in level,” he admitted. Deco emphasized that any new signing must align with the club’s philosophy, adding that Williams and others have shown renewed interest in the project.

Between his 11 goals and seven assists in all competitions last season, Williams provided glimpses of elite talent despite battling fitness issues. Deco explained that the club’s long-term vision involved identifying players who could sustain Barcelona’s competitive edge: “Players like Nico and Luis Diaz have the hunger to succeed, and that’s what matters.”

Deco clarified that Joan Laporta and the management are weighing all winger options but will not overload the squad with expensive signings. Once a winger is secured, further high-level arrivals may be paused.

With the €58m clause seen as reasonable for a 22-year-old with room to grow, Barcelona see this as a timely opportunity. Williams’ technical flair and pace could help the Catalans retain their domestic dominance and enhance their European ambitions.

Williams’ potential arrival could finalize Barcelona’s attacking setup for the new season, joining Yamal, Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and possibly marking the end of their summer pursuit of marquee attackers.
