Atlético Madrid’s Winless Start Continues After Alavés Stalemate

Atlético Madrid’s rough start to the La Liga campaign dragged on after they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw away at Alavés, leaving Diego Simeone still without a win in the league this season. Softfootball reports.

Giuliano Simeone, on his return to Mendizorroza after a loan spell from atleti, gave his side an early boost. The 21-year-old showed great quality during a scrappy passage of play before firing the ball past Antonio Sivera in the seventh minute.

But just when it looked like his strike might settle the visitors, Alexander Sørloth clumsily brought down Nahuel Tenaglia inside the box. Carlos Vicente stepped up and converted the penalty, and once again Atlético allowed a lead to slip through their fingers ,the third game in a row that’s happened.

Diego Simeone’s side looked far from their best, with their attack struggling to click and their defence shaky throughout the first half. The home crowd had even more reason to believe when a medical emergency in the stands caused a long stoppage, halting Atlético’s momentum.

After the restart, Antoine Griezmann was sent on to try and spark something, and he almost did , forcing Sivera into a sharp save before rattling the post with a fierce corner delivery. Softfootball understands that Atleti threw everything at it in the final 15 minutes plus added time ,bringing on new signing Raspadori to try to make something happen , but Alavés stood firm, pressing hard and shutting down any space.

Alaves took to their official X handle to post a post match reaction from one of its players to the fans syaing lets keep going, watch below;

The draw means Atleti’s winless run to start the season is their worst in Diego Simeone era, and it mirrors the poor opening they last endured in 2009/10 season under Abel Resino. For Alavés, it was another strong statement at Mendizorroza, where they have now gone six matches unbeaten.
