As Arsenal prepare for a pivotal summer transfer window, Mikel Arteta has addressed ongoing speculation about his relationship with the club’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta. Despite reports of disagreement over key transfer targets, Arteta insists the two are aligned on Arsenal’s vision.

The Gunners are expected to spend significantly this summer after falling short in the Premier League title race once again. A new striker tops their priority list, with Arteta believed to be a long-time admirer of Benjamin Sesko—who chose to stay at RB Leipzig last year—and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, who remains a difficult target due to his club’s Champions League qualification.

However, Berta, who replaced Edu earlier this year, is reportedly favoring a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres as the leading forward option.

Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s weekend clash with Newcastle, Arteta described his relationship with Berta as strong, highlighting their different personalities but mutual ambition. According to Arteta, Berta is clear in his ideas and committed to improving the club in all areas.

When asked if he and Berta were on the same page regarding specific transfer targets, Arteta said they share the same goals—even if not every plan can be executed perfectly. He acknowledged that flexibility is essential in football, and sometimes alternative solutions are needed when primary targets are out of reach.

Arteta also emphasized the importance of squad continuity. Keeping current players happy and feeling valued is as crucial as adding new talent, he said.

On the risk of internal misalignment, Arteta was adamant that communication within the club remains transparent. He stressed that disagreements haven’t been a problem during his five years with Edu, nor are they expected to be with Berta.

The manager pointed out that decision-making is a collaborative process grounded in analysis, questioning, and evidence. While some signings have worked out better than others, Arteta said the team has learned from past experiences to ensure more informed choices going forward.

With Berta set to take the lead on transfer dealings and Arteta providing tactical guidance, Arsenal aim to strengthen their squad efficiently this summer as they look to finally convert promise into silverware.
