Arsenal turn to Hugo Ekitike after failed bids for Gyokeres and Sesko

Arsenal have intensified their interest in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike after encountering roadblocks in deals for top attacking targets Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko.

The Gunners are prioritising the signing of a natural number nine this summer following widespread criticism over their failure to reinforce the forward line in the last two transfer windows. Injuries to both Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus last season further exposed the lack of depth up front and increased pressure on sporting director Andrea Berta to deliver a marquee forward.

Viktor Gyokeres has been Arsenal’s first-choice target after a phenomenal season at Sporting Lisbon, where he netted 54 goals in 52 games. However, Sporting’s refusal to budge on his £85m release clause has made a deal difficult.

Arsenal then turned their attention to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but their initial bid of around £46.8m plus add-ons was rejected. Leipzig are reportedly holding out for a figure between £68m and £85m.

With both options proving complicated, Bild reports that Arsenal have now “suddenly” identified Ekitike as a serious alternative. The 23-year-old enjoyed a strong season with Eintracht Frankfurt, helping them qualify for the Champions League and further raising his value on the European stage.

Despite Arsenal’s growing interest, a deal won’t come cheap. Eintracht are demanding €100m (£85m) and have made it clear they are under no pressure to sell. Sporting director Markus Krosche stated, “If the price isn’t right, then he’ll just stay with us,” though he did not completely close the door on a transfer.

Krosche hailed Ekitike as “exceptional,” emphasising his role in Frankfurt’s success and his high ceiling for further development. Still just 22, Ekitike is under contract with the German club until June 2029, further strengthening Eintracht’s negotiating position.

Both Liverpool and Chelsea have also shown interest in the French striker, meaning Arsenal could face competition if they decide to push forward. However, if deals for Gyokeres and Sesko continue to stall, Ekitike could quickly move to the top of Arsenal’s shortlist.
