Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has suggested that his former club should consider pursuing a transfer for Real Madrid forward Rodrygo this summer. The Brazilian forward, who joined Madrid from Santos in 2019, has won 13 trophies during his six years in the Spanish capital, contributing 68 goals and 50 assists across all competitions.
However, this season has been a frustrating one for the 24-year-old, who has scored only six league goals, and reports from Spain indicate that Rodrygo is becoming disillusioned with his role at Madrid. With Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Jude Bellingham dominating the limelight, speculation is growing that Rodrygo could be considering a move away. Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool, are reportedly monitoring his situation.

Madrid is open to selling, but they are likely to demand a fee in excess of £85 million for the talented winger. While Newcastle is not yet believed to be in the running for his signature, Shearer believes that Rodrygo could be a great fit for the Magpies under Eddie Howe’s management.
“Rodrygo would do very well in the Premier League – he’s an excellent player,” Shearer told Betfair. “If he’s unhappy at Real Madrid, there will certainly be interest from several Premier League clubs. Newcastle could be one of those clubs, but it depends on whether they could make the finances work.”
Shearer also highlighted the potential role of Bruno Guimaraes in helping to persuade Rodrygo to move to St James’ Park. The two Brazilians are well acquainted, and Shearer believes Guimaraes could play a part in the recruitment process if Newcastle decides to pursue the deal. “Bruno Guimaraes would know him very well, and if it comes to that, I’m sure he’d speak to him,” Shearer added.
Should Newcastle make a move for Rodrygo, it would be a bold statement of intent as they look to strengthen their squad and establish themselves as one of the Premier League’s top contenders.
