Ajax close to wrapping up a deal for former Arsenal star, Tomiyasu

Dutch giants Ajax are close to wrapping up a deal for former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu as a free agent, Softfootball reports.

The 26-year-old was released by Arsenal at the summer as he was plagued by injuries for majority of his stay at the club. He even missed a whole season without kicking a ball due to injury.

According to football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano via his official X handle, he informs that Ajax are already working on a deal to bring the defender to the Eredivisie. He said:

Ajax are closing in on deal to sign former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu as free agent. Short term contract until June, as @GBabaSport reports — could be offered a longer deal in summer 2026 based on this season performances. Agreement at final stages.

Tomiyasu’s former club, Arsenal will be facing Club Brugge later this evening in the Match-Day 6 of the UEFA Champions League.

He joined Arsenal from Bologna in August 2021, becoming the first Japanese player to play competitively for the Gunners. He can play at right-back and centre-back comfortable and loved by Arsenal fans in his first season at the club.

Tomiyasu contributed to title challenges with Arsenal and earned Player of the Month awards before facing injuries, with his contract eventually terminated in late 2025 as he recovered from knee surgery, ending his stint with the North London side.
