Aberdeen FC have taken to their official X handle to announce the departure of assistant coach Tony Docherty, bringing an end to his brief interim spell with the Scottish club. Softfootball reports.
They revealed:
With formalities now concluded, interim assistant Tony Docherty has this evening left the Club. Should any further changes be made to the staff, they will be communicated when officially confirmed.
The decision comes following Aberdeen’s appointment of Stephen Robinson as their new permanent head coach. Robinson, who previously managed St Mirren FC, officially took charge on March 12, 2026, signing a long-term contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2029.
Stephen Robinson arrival signals a full transition to a new leadership structure as Aberdeen attempt to stabilize their season while battling near the relegation zone in the Scottish Premiership.
Docherty joined the coaching setup on February 13, 2026, shortly after leaving Ross County FC in December 2025.

His short-term role was designed to support the temporary management structure led by Peter Leven during a difficult period for the club.
Despite the routine nature of the announcement, some supporters criticized the club’s statement for its clinical tone, noting the absence of a clear message of appreciation for Docherty’s contribution during the transitional period.
In other managerial news, former England national football team defender Ashley Cole has been appointed head coach of Cesena FC in Italy’s Serie B, marking his first senior managerial role after years in coaching roles with Chelsea and Everton.
