Softfootball understands that Beye once served as Marseille captain between 2003 and 2007. His appointment comes shortly after the departure of Roberto De Zerbi earlier in February 2026, a decision collectively reached by club stakeholders amid an inconsistent Ligue 1 campaign.

Beye was part of the recent managerial shake-up across French football, having been dismissed by Stade Rennais F.C. on February 9, 2026. His sacking followed a poor spell that included four consecutive defeats in all competitions, notably a 3–1 loss to Lens and a 3–0 Coupe de France elimination against Marseille.

Despite that setback, Marseille’s hierarchy have turned to the former defender in hopes that his leadership qualities and strong connection to the club can stabilize performances during the crucial final stretch of the 2025/26 season.

Meanwhile, Mehdi Benatia has reversed his earlier resignation and will remain until season’s end. This comes after his initial resignation on February 15, 2026 as a result of misalignment with the club’s direction.
