Romero Rescues Spurs as Burnley’s Winless Run Stretches in Late Turf Moor Drama

3 Min Read

Burnley’s long wait for a Premier League win continued after they were denied a vital victory by a last-gasp Tottenham Hotspur equaliser in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Turf Moor. The result, shared on the club’s official X account, halted Burnley’s five-match losing run against Spurs but extended their own winless league streak to 14 games, leaving Scott Parker’s side eight points adrift of safety.

The contest had been billed as a key survival test, as outlined in SoftFootball’s pre-match preview of the Premier League showdown between Burnley and Tottenham.

Despite their league struggles, Burnley once again showed resilience against high-profile opposition, similar to their recent gritty draw at Anfield against Liverpool, which SoftFootball highlighted as further evidence of their fighting spirit this season.

However, familiar late-game frustrations resurfaced as Tottenham captain Cristian Romero broke Clarets hearts deep into stoppage time. Tottenham dominated much of the opening period and were rewarded in the 38th minute when Micky van de Ven lashed a low effort into the corner from a loose ball following a set piece.

Burnley, who had offered little going forward, stunned the visitors on the stroke of halftime. Axel Tuanzebe, scoring his first goal in two years, rose unmarked to head home Kyle Walker’s teasing delivery and restore parity. The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spurs controlling possession but struggling to turn pressure into clear chances.

Burnley grew in belief and were rewarded in the 76th minute when substitute Lyle Foster reacted quickest after his initial effort was saved, firing home from close range to put the hosts ahead.

Turf Moor sensed a rare and precious win. Tottenham pushed forward desperately in the closing stages, with Xavi Simons rattling the crossbar as Burnley clung on.

Just when it seemed the Clarets had done enough, Romero rose highest in the box to power home a header from Wilson Odobert’s cross in the 90th minute, silencing the home crowd and salvaging a point for Thomas Frank’s side.

Statistically, Spurs’ dominance was clear. They enjoyed 63 per cent possession, attempted 18 shots to Burnley’s eight, and forced Martin Dúbravka into nine saves.

Yet Burnley’s ability to frustrate stronger opponents was evident again, even if the outcome did little to ease their relegation fears. For Tottenham, the draw extended their inconsistent league form and ensured pressure remains firmly on Frank ahead of a daunting clash with Manchester City.
