Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Andrey Santos is set to step into the starting lineup to replace suspended Moisés Caicedo for the Premier League trip to Elland Road against Leeds United, which was previewed by SoftFootball. Caicedo will miss the match following a straight red card in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal, triggering a three-game ban.

Maresca emphasised Santos’ readiness for the role in a post shared by Fabrizio Romano on his official X account. The 21-year-old Brazilian impressed during his loan spell at Strasbourg and was named Player of the Match in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Burnley, completing 13 defensive actions and showcasing his ability to dominate midfield battles.

Fabrizio Romano posted:

Enzo Maresca: Andrey Santos is ready to replace Caicedo.

His position is playing as a no.6, like Moi… he is ready. One that can play good in that position is Josh Acheampong but we will see.

In addition to Santos, Maresca highlighted academy graduate Josh Acheampong as an alternative option in midfield. The 19-year-old, typically a centre-back or right-back, has demonstrated tactical flexibility, often drifting into central areas during build-up play. Maresca’s statement suggests Chelsea may experiment with unconventional solutions to cover for Caicedo’s absence.

Reece James’ availability remains uncertain despite a strong showing against Arsenal. With Chelsea playing two matches in four days, Maresca is cautious about overloading James.

Chelsea’s midfield depth is further tested by injuries to Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo. This leaves Enzo Fernández alongside either Santos or Acheampong as the primary option in defensive midfield.

Maresca cited past adaptations during key player absences, including matches where Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill were unavailable, highlighting his squad’s resilience.

With Leeds fighting to escape the relegation zone, Chelsea will need Santos to assert control in midfield from the first whistle. The team is determined to maintain its winning momentum and extend its unbeaten run, proving the squad can cope with suspensions and injuries while competing at the top of the table.
