FC Barcelona return to La Liga action this Sunday with a key clash away to Sevilla at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. The Catalans head into the match looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the midweek, a result that stung given Barça were overwhelming favourites on the night, softfootball reports.

Speaking in Saturday’s press conference via the team’s official website, coach Hansi Flick highlighted the challenge that awaits in Andalusia, pointing to Sevilla’s identity and intensity as reasons why his side will need to be at their best,Flick said;

They’re a very intense side with an aggressive style, It’ll be a tough match. We know them well, they have their own identity and a great crowd behind them. It won’t be easy.

One major blow for Barça is the absence of Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old, who just scooped the prestigious Kopa Trophy for the second year in a row, will miss the game and, as Softfootball earlier reported, is set to be sidelined for three weeks. Flick confirmed the youngster’s situation but insisted he would be managed carefully, Flick explained;

He felt good on Wednesday, otherwise he wouldn’t have played against PSG, I’ve spoken to him. He’s better today, but still not ready to play. Everyone knows his quality, but we have to give him the right number of minutes when he’s back.

Beyond injuries, Flick also reflected on the pressures of international duty for key players and the importance of managing minutes wisely throughout the season, he stated;

It’s part of a top player’s life. If a player is good and important for his country, he’ll play, but it needs to be handled properly.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Flick was clear about the team’s objectives and the mentality needed to recover quickly from their Champions League setback, he stressed;

The coach ended by reiterating the value of staying true to Barcelona’s tactical identity, especially when it comes to pressing, he said;

Our idea of pressing the opponent is crucial, If there’s no pressure on the ball, the defensive line can’t push up. We’ve improved in recent games, but we need to keep working on it.

With a demanding Sevilla side waiting and Yamal’s absence confirmed, Sunday offers Barça the chance to respond with character and prove they are worthy of retaining the La Liga title. After slipping up in Europe, Flick’s men will be determined to bounce back strongly and solidify their place at the top of the domestic standings with a vital three points.
