Former Arsenal Academy Forward Billy Vigar Dies at 21 After On-Field Head Injury

Former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar has heartbreakingly passed away at just 21, days after suffering a severe head injury while playing for non-league side Chichester City.

The tragic news was confirmed on Thursday morning, with Chichester describing the young forward as “a much-loved figure” at the club. His sudden death has left family, teammates and even his former clubs completely shaken.

Off the pitch Softfootball confirmed that William Saliba had extended his contract with the Gunners, valid for five years, and this news will be another downtime of information for the Gunners, whose Fans expressed their disappointments in Arsenal’s last game in the EFL against Port Vale where they enjoyed a laboured victory.

Vigar was injured during Chichester’s clash with Wingate & Finchley last Saturday. The match had to be suspended when the seriousness of the incident became clear. He was rushed to hospital, placed in an induced coma and later had surgery in attempt to help his recovery. Sadly, despite all efforts, his injuries turned out to be too severe, and he passed away on Thursday.

It is with great sadness that Chichester City Football Club has to confirm the passing of Billy Vigar… After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday (25th) morning… His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.

Former club Arsenal also reacted with a touching tribute posted on their official website.

Everyone at Arsenal is devastated by the shocking news that former academy graduate Billy Vigar has passed away. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time. Rest in peace, Billy.

Derby County, where Vigar had a loan spell in the 2022/23 season, also added in a post uploaded on the team’s official X account.

The PFA and FA also expressed shock, offering condolences and support to his loved ones.

Vigar joined Arsenal’s Hale End academy at 14, featuring for the Under-21s before moving on to Derby County and Eastbourne Borough. After leaving the Gunners in 2023, he turned out for Hastings United before signing with Chichester earlier this season.

A promising football journey cut painfully short, Billy’s story is one of talent, passion and a love for the game that will not be forgotten soon.
