The DFB-Pokal returns with a true and typical David-versus-Goliath encounter as third-tier SV Wehen Wiesbaden hosts Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at the Brita-Arena. It’s the first-ever competitive meeting between the two sides.
Softfootball understands that Wehen have endured a rollercoaster start to their 3. Liga campaign, beating Ulm 3-1, drawing 2-2 with Verl after blowing an early lead, and losing 4-3 to Rot-Weiss Essen courtesy of a last-minute goal. Manager Nils Döring sticks with a 4-4-2, but doubts remain over defensive stalwart Sascha Mockenhaupt, leaving captain Fatih Kaya to shoulder leadership duties in attack.
Bayern, meanwhile, arrives in formidable form. Vincent Kompany’s side claimed the Super Cup against Stuttgart before thrashing RB Leipzig 6-0 in their Bundesliga opener. Star striker Harry Kane netted a hat-trick in that game, while Michael Olise, Joshua Kimmich, and Leon Goretzka are also expected to feature despite rotation. The Bavarians remain without Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Kingsley Coman, and Tom Bischof due to long-term injuries.

For Bayern, the Pokal holds added significance. Despite winning the trophy a record 20 times, the club has gone five years without lifting it an unusually long drought by their standards. Kompany knows ending that wait would be a statement early in his reign.
Anything less than a comfortable Bayern win would be a major shock.
