Softfootball can report that Liverpool have confirmed they will honour the full remainder of Diogo Jota’s contract, ensuring his family continues to receive his salary over the next two years.
According to Misr Connect, Liverpool described the gesture as part of a broader commitment to support the late player’s family following the tragic road accident in Spain that claimed the lives of Jota and his brother, André Silva.

Recall that Softfootball reported what led to Jota’s death. Jota, 28, passed away last Thursday while travelling to Santander with André, ahead of a planned return to Liverpool’s pre-season. The Portuguese forward had recently undergone lung surgery and was advised to avoid flying, prompting the decision to drive and take a ferry back to the UK.
In the statement, Liverpool confirmed that Jota’s wages would be transferred directly to his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three children to ensure continued financial stability.
Beyond the salary commitment, the club also announced the creation of a Special Support Fund. The fund will be dedicated to covering the long-term needs of Jota’s children, including housing, education, and healthcare. It will be managed transparently, with input from the family’s representatives to guarantee its effectiveness and integrity.
The initiative reflects the deep respect and affection Liverpool held for Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and helped the club win the Premier League in the 2024/25 season.
As earlier reported by Softfootball, Liverpool had postponed the scheduled return of their players to pre-season training following the death of forward Diogo Jota. The mood around the club has been sombre, with an emotional outpouring from fans, teammates, and the football community.
Outside Anfield, supporters laid floral tributes, scarves, shirts, and personal messages beneath the Bill Shankly statue in remembrance of the forward, who helped the club to the Premier League title last season.
