Liverpool and Portugal star, Diogo Jota, 28, dies in car crash

Softfootball can confirm that Liverpool and Portugal star, Diogo Jota has passed away.

The attacker who just got married about two weeks ago was in involved a car accident with his brother in the province of Zamora, Spain. The accident is said to have happened at kilometer 65 of the A-52, near the Zamora region of Sanabria. The road in Spain is a key route taken by drivers leaving northern Portugal.

According to local reports, their car  slid off the road and caught fire instantly. His brother, Andre Silva who is also a footballer is confirmed dead as well.

Jota had just married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children, and described himself as the luckiest man in the world in an interview released yesterday. Making their statement, the local emergency operations confirmed the accident saying;

The 1-1-2 Castilla y León operations room received several calls reporting a vehicle accident at Km. 65 of the A-52, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A car was reported to have been involved in an accident and the vehicle was on fire.

‘1-1-2 notified the Zamora Traffic Police, the Zamora Provincial Council Fire Brigade, and the Sacyl Emergency Coordination Center (CCU) of this accident.

From there, a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were sent, who confirmed the death of two people on the scene.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers  in September 2020  for a fee of more than £40million and has won the Premier League title, the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the UEFA Champions League. While at Wolves, he won the EFL Championship.

For his country, he rose through the ranks of U19 to the national team where he played 49 times scoring 14 goals. He won the UEFA Nations league trophy with Portugal on two occasions.
