French star Giroud plans homecoming, part ways with American club

French star Olivier Giroud has been confirmed to have parted ways with Los Angeles Galaxy after one year with the West Coast side. Giroud, 38, joined the American outfit after leaving Milan at the expiration of his contract, but what could have been a permanent retirement for the striker was just an adventure. The former Arsenal star is set to leave LA Galaxy on June 30th and set to return to France, Lille, for what could be called a homecoming for the first time after 13 years. The last time he played in his home country was in 2012 when he led Montpellier to a historic league title.

LAFC confirm exit as a mutual agreement

LAFC confirmed the departure was a mutual decision, with general manager John Thorrington praising Giroud’s short but influential spell in Los Angeles.

“Olivier has been an exemplary professional,” said Thorrington. “He brought humility and a winning mentality that elevated the squad. We’re grateful for his contributions and wish him and his family the very best.”

Giroud helped LAFC lift their first-ever U.S. Open Cup and was part of the squad that competed in the FIFA Club World Cup.

“I’m thankful to the fans, teammates, and staff for making this a memorable chapter,” said Giroud. “Winning a trophy and playing at the Club World Cup made this a great experience for me and my family.”

Why the sudden move?

Giroud was under contract until the end of 2024, but reports suggest the French star and his family struggled to settle in America.

According to Taylor Twellman, Giroud and his family had trouble adapting to life in America. Earlier this year, the Frenchman’s home was reportedly burgled, with an estimated $500,000 in jewellery stolen, a moment believed to have influenced his decision to move.

While LAFC president Olivier Létang had previously shut down speculation of a transfer, calling Giroud “the complete package”, the striker appears ready to return to a familiar environment in France.

Giroud scored five goals in 37 appearances for LAFC, mostly playing a supporting role under Steve Cherundolo.

Who is the possible replacement for LAFC?

Giroud’s exit frees up a spot in LAFC’s roster, and with German player Thomas Müller, a possible replacement. The Bayern Munich player will be out of contract after the Club World Cup, and sources suggest he’s a top target to replace the departing Frenchman.
