Man City thrash Juventus 5-2 to top Club World Cup group

Manchester City delivered a dominant performance in the Club World Cup, defeating Juventus 5-2 in front of over 50,000 fans in Orlando. The result secured them top spot in Group G and made them the only team to finish the group stage with a perfect record.

The match began with a high tempo, and it was Jeremy Doku who broke the deadlock just nine minutes in. The Belgian winger latched onto Rayan Ait-Nouri’s pass, cut inside, and slotted home. However, Juventus quickly equalized through Teun Koopmeiners after Ederson’s sloppy pass gifted him a golden opportunity.

City retook the lead when Pierre Kalulu accidentally diverted Matheus Nunes’s cross into his own net. The second half saw Pep Guardiola’s side shift into another gear. Substitute Erling Haaland scored just minutes after coming on, and then helped set up Phil Foden, who tapped in from close range following a scramble.

The standout moment came from Savinho, who unleashed a thunderous long-range shot into the top corner to make it five. Although Dusan Vlahovic pulled a goal back for Juventus in the 84th minute, it was merely a consolation.

Statistically, Manchester City dominated with 76% possession, 24 shots, and 11 on target compared to Juventus’s 5 attempts and just 2 on target. Guardiola’s team also had six corners to Juventus’s one.

Savinho, who not only scored but also assisted Foden’s goal, was named the man of the match for his outstanding contribution. His goal is already being hailed as a potential contender for goal of the tournament.

City will now prepare for a last-16 clash in Orlando against the Group H runner-up. Juventus, meanwhile, must regroup before facing the Group H winner—possibly Real Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg, or Al-Hilal—in Miami.

Though Man City scored six against Al-Ain earlier in the competition, this five-goal show against a tougher Juventus side is seen as a more meaningful statement of intent. Guardiola’s new signings continue to settle in quickly, adding depth and flair to a side aiming to win the Club World Cup.

Juventus boss Igor Tudor, who made several changes to his squad for this match, saw his plans unravel. Still, Juve can take confidence from their earlier group victories and hope to bounce back in the knockout stage.

Erling Haaland’s goal marked his 300th in top-flight and international football—a testament to the striker’s relentless scoring ability.

City now look ahead with confidence, seeking to carry this momentum into the next round, and perhaps all the way to Club World Cup glory.
