Viktor Gyokeres’s future remains uncertain as the transfer saga involving Arsenal and Manchester United takes another unexpected turn. The Swedish striker, who exploded for 54 goals in 52 appearances last season, was initially tipped to join Arsenal but has now changed his stance and is prioritizing a move to Old Trafford instead.
Sporting Lisbon had previously received interest from both Arsenal and Juventus, but Gyokeres seemed focused on joining Mikel Arteta’s squad. Reports indicated that a phone conversation between the striker and Sporting president Frederico Varandas revealed Gyokeres’s preference for Arsenal.
However, the Gunners put talks on hold after frustrations with Sporting, who reportedly failed to honor a previous gentleman’s agreement related to the striker’s release.

The indecision from Arsenal has now opened the door for Manchester United. According to The Mirror, Gyokeres has reassessed his options and now favors a reunion with former manager Ruben Amorim, who recently took over at Man United. His representatives have already contacted the Red Devils to express interest, following the player’s rejection of an earlier move to Al-Hilal.
Despite his impressive form, the 27-year-old hasn’t drawn the level of attention expected, adding strain to his relationship with Sporting. The situation has reportedly soured between Gyokeres’s camp and the Portuguese club, complicating negotiations further.

Manchester United, while interested, must sell players before finalizing another big-money deal. The club has already spent £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha and is eyeing a £60 million move for Bryan Mbeumo. Gyokeres remains on their radar, but space and funds must be freed up first.
A number of potential outgoings could make the transfer possible. Forwards such as Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho are no longer seen as untouchable and could be moved on. However, their hefty wage demands are a barrier to permanent transfers, making loan moves a likely scenario.

Manchester United might also consider cashing in on players like Kobbie Mainoo—whose sale would be considered pure profit—or goalkeeper Andre Onana, who has come under scrutiny following two error-prone seasons and may be replaced.
While Arsenal still monitor Gyokeres’s situation, they are also evaluating RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko as an alternative option. Sporting director Andrea Berta is assessing the financial implications of both pursuits, leaving Arsenal’s attacking plans hanging in the balance.
With uncertainty surrounding both North London clubs, Gyokeres’s shift in preference could be decisive. Unless Arsenal reignite their interest quickly, Manchester United may emerge as the likeliest destination for the prolific Swedish striker.
