Manchester United are preparing for the 2025–26 season with two major attacking additions. Matheus Cunha has already joined from Wolves for £62.5 million, while Bryan Mbeumo’s move from Brentford, estimated at £63 million including add-ons, is expected to be finalized before pre-season training starts on July 7.

The Red Devils are keen to revamp their frontline, focusing on pace and dynamism. Cunha and Mbeumo are expected to inject fresh energy into United’s attacking third. Despite not qualifying for European competitions next season, the club is spending heavily under Ruben Amorim’s leadership.

At the heart of the preparations is the question of shirt numbers. Cunha is reportedly set to take over the iconic number 10 jersey, a shirt historically worn by legends like Sir Bobby Charlton, Wayne Rooney, and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The number is available due to Marcus Rashford’s uncertain future. Rashford, who wore the shirt since 2018, spent last season’s second half on loan at Aston Villa. While a permanent deal with Villa seems unlikely, Barcelona are currently exploring a loan option for him.

Cunha, known for his confidence and flair, is viewed as a natural fit for the famous number 10 shirt. His arrival aligns with Amorim’s vision to reshape United’s attack, and taking on such a legendary number underlines the trust being placed in him.

Meanwhile, Mbeumo has his sights set on the number 19 shirt, a number he wore at both Brentford and with Cameroon. He prefers a familiar number rather than a symbolic one that might carry extra scrutiny or pressure. If 19 is unavailable, the number 17 could be an option, especially if Alejandro Garnacho departs. Should Rasmus Hojlund leave, the number 9 shirt might also become vacant.

There are other numbers that could open up as well. With Antony and Jadon Sancho expected to leave, the number 21 and 25 shirts may also be up for grabs. However, current indications suggest that Mbeumo will likely stick with his favored 19 as he begins his chapter at Old Trafford.

United’s shirt number shake-up reflects a deeper rebuild in motion, aimed at reinvigorating the club’s frontline with fresh talent and ambition. As Cunha and Mbeumo settle into their new surroundings, the numbers on their backs may symbolize the fresh identity the team hopes to carve out in the upcoming campaign.
