Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has voiced strong support for the club’s push to sign a new striker, urging the Gunners to act decisively in their pursuit of either Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres this summer. He highlighted that bringing in a reliable No.9 could be the missing piece for a serious Premier League title challenge next season.
Sesko, currently at RB Leipzig, has long been admired by Arsenal, but negotiations have hit a snag over the Slovenian striker’s wage demands. Despite his impressive attributes — strength, pace, and a keen eye for goal — Parlour pointed out one key area of weakness: “He’s not great in the air, he can do better in the air probably, if I’m being honest.”
Parlour remains optimistic, however, stating that Sesko or Gyokeres will likely be leading the line at the Emirates when the new campaign kicks off. The ex-midfielder noted: “It’s not rocket science is it? It’s glaring at you. Arsenal need a top striker, and both of these guys are top talents.”
Arsenal’s frustrations in the striker market have been compounded by Sporting CP forward Gyokeres potentially forcing a move. The Swedish striker is believed to be open to joining Arsenal, even as Manchester United circles as another suitor.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have reportedly completed a deal for Spain international Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Parlour believes Zubimendi’s arrival will complement Declan Rice and boost Arsenal’s midfield flexibility, especially with Thomas Partey staying at the club.
The north London side are also expected to explore options out wide, with injuries to Bukayo Saka last season exposing the lack of depth in the winger department. “They struggled a little when Saka was out,” said Parlour. “So I think they’ll go for another winger as well.”
In terms of broader squad dynamics, the former Arsenal man remains upbeat about the club’s trajectory. He stressed that a bit more luck with injuries could be the difference between falling short again and finally ending their title drought. Reflecting on last season’s outcome, Parlour said, “Liverpool were the best team in the league, the most consistent. But Arsenal had more injuries. If they can stay fitter this time, they’ve got a great chance.”
