Theo Walcott fears Arsenal made mistake by missing out on Liam Delap

Theo Walcott has expressed his concern over Arsenal’s decision not to pursue Liam Delap, who sealed a £30 million move to Chelsea earlier this summer. The young striker had a breakout season with Ipswich Town, scoring 12 goals despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Chelsea moved swiftly to activate Delap’s relegation clause, fending off interest from Manchester United in the process. Arsenal, though actively looking for a striker, focused their attention on other targets like Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko.

Walcott, speaking in an interview with The Athletic, voiced disappointment that Arsenal weren’t more aggressive in the chase. “Delap can break that No. 9 curse at Chelsea,” he said. “He’s got fight, he’s fearless — the next one after Harry Kane.”

The former Arsenal winger highlighted how modern wingers have become more self-focused, leaving a gap for traditional centre-forwards like Delap to thrive. He believes the 22-year-old fits the profile Arsenal badly need up front. According to Walcott, Arsenal missed out on a striker who not only scores goals but brings intensity and leadership to the pitch — characteristics the Gunners have lacked in recent title pushes.

Delap’s performances for Ipswich caught the eye across the league. Despite their relegation, his output and maturity earned him admirers, and Chelsea wasted no time making their move after City allowed his exit. Meanwhile, Arsenal remain in the market. Talks are ongoing with Sporting CP over Gyokeres, and negotiations continue with RB Leipzig over Sesko. But Walcott’s comments add pressure on the club to ensure they don’t miss another golden opportunity.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are hoping Delap can bring an end to their long-standing striker woes. With the club still unsettled on Nicolas Jackson’s future and fresh options being scouted, Delap might soon get his chance to lead the line at Stamford Bridge. As the transfer window heats up, Arsenal fans will be watching closely — especially if Delap hits the ground running in west London.
