Three goalkeepers Man United could sign to replace Onana this summer

Andre Onana

Manchester United appear ready to revamp their goalkeeping department this summer, with current number one Andre Onana potentially facing an early exit. Despite the Cameroon international’s insistence on staying and proving himself, new head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen on installing his own trusted figure between the sticks.

Onana’s performances have come under scrutiny since his arrival from Inter Milan, and while selling him won’t be easy due to his wages and contract length, interest from clubs like Monaco may open the door for a move. With that in mind, United are lining up possible replacements—three names in particular stand out.

First up is Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, who has become one of the most consistent and high-profile goalkeepers in Europe. The Argentine, a World Cup winner, was sensational last season and is reportedly open to joining United despite their lack of European football. While his £40 million price tag is steep for a 32-year-old, his experience and leadership could be vital in reshaping the team.

Another option is Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin. The Ukrainian has spent most of his time as a backup to Thibaut Courtois, but impressed when called upon during Madrid’s injury-hit 2023–24 campaign. A fee of around £12.8 million could be enough to tempt Madrid, especially with Lunin believed to be seeking a guaranteed starting role—a prospect United can offer.

Finally, Jan Oblak has emerged as a potential wildcard. Atletico Madrid’s long-serving No. 1 could be tempted by a fresh challenge after years of excellence in La Liga. Though his contract runs until 2028 and the lack of Champions League football may complicate matters, United remain hopeful due to the Slovenian’s openness to a move and interest from Saudi clubs potentially paving the way.

With Amorim set to reshape his squad this summer, the goalkeeper position may be one of the first major changes at Old Trafford. Whether United pursue the proven experience of Martinez, the emerging potential of Lunin, or the world-class consistency of Oblak, a new face in goal appears increasingly likely.
