Ilkay Gundogan’s future at Manchester City remains uncertain amid growing reports of interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray. Despite speculation of a pre-agreement with the Super Lig champions, Pep Guardiola has insisted the veteran midfielder is still very much in his plans for now.
The 34-year-old has made 51 appearances in all competitions this season—second only to Josko Gvardiol—and was a key figure in City’s recent 2-0 win over Wydad AC in the FIFA Club World Cup. His contract, recently extended by another year, keeps him tied to the club until the summer of 2026.
However, with City’s midfield department now heavily stocked, questions around Gundogan’s role going forward are valid. Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders have arrived, Rodri has returned from injury, and Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, and Matheus Nunes all remain key figures. The recent departure of Kevin De Bruyne to Napoli has slightly opened the door, but not enough to quash exit rumours.

Guardiola, when asked about Gundogan’s future, responded calmly: “No news, good news. I haven’t spoken to him. If he wasn’t part of our plans, he wouldn’t be here. But yes, we do have a long squad, and some players may need to leave.”
Gundogan has previously admitted he could see himself finishing his career at Galatasaray, the club he supported growing up. While he hasn’t confirmed any ongoing talks, he didn’t dismiss the possibility of a future move either, saying it would be “a source of pride” if the timing and conditions aligned.
Galatasaray manager Okan Buruk has openly welcomed the idea, saying Gundogan “would make everyone happy” if he joined, underlining just how highly regarded the midfielder is in Turkey. For now, though, Gundogan stays with City as they chase more silverware in the Club World Cup. His future beyond this tournament, however, remains a storyline to watch.
