Chelsea end pursuit of Maignan as focus shifts to goalkeeper exits

However, a move failed to materialise, and with Chelsea now back in the market following their Club World Cup trip to the USA, the club has made a firm decision not to revisit the deal. According to Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol, the Blues never tabled an official bid and remain uninterested in pursuing Maignan before the window closes on September 1.

Instead, the club’s focus has turned to trimming their goalkeeping department. Currently, Chelsea have four shot-stoppers on their books: Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, and Mike Penders. The new strategy reportedly involves loaning one to Strasbourg, their sister club, and permanently offloading another.

Petrovic, who had a loan spell at Strasbourg last season but was left out of the Club World Cup squad, appears to be the most likely candidate to be sold. Meanwhile, youngster Mike Penders is expected to head out on loan to gain experience after officially linking up with Chelsea from Genk.

With Enzo Maresca shaping his squad for the 2025-26 campaign, the Blues seem content with their current options between the posts. The decision to walk away from Maignan highlights the club’s preference to build stability internally rather than make big-money additions in goal.
