Kylian Mbappe has been discharged from hospital following a health scare that sidelined him during Real Madrid’s Club World Cup opener.
The French forward, who missed the 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal on Wednesday, was initially absent due to what head coach Xabi Alonso described as a “serious viral infection.” Later, the club confirmed that Mbappe had been hospitalised with acute gastroenteritis.
On Thursday, Real Madrid released an official statement:
“Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment.”
Fortunately, Mbappe has now recovered enough to be released and will continue treatment at Real Madrid’s training base.
A follow-up statement on Thursday night added:
“Kylian Mbappe was discharged from hospital this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid training camp. He will continue receiving specific medical treatment and will gradually return to team activity.”
While he is expected to miss Sunday’s clash with Pachuca, there is optimism that the 26-year-old could return in time for Real Madrid’s final Group H match against Red Bull Salzburg on June 27.
Mbappe enjoyed a prolific debut season at the Bernabeu, netting 43 goals and providing five assists in 56 appearances across all competitions. He tallied 31 goals in La Liga and added seven in the Champions League, despite Real Madrid finishing the campaign with only the UEFA Super Cup to show for their efforts.
Though he’s recovering, Real Madrid will be cautious in reintegrating their star forward, especially with crucial matches looming in their Club World Cup campaign.
