Poland’s search for a new national team head coach has taken an unexpected twist, with Gareth Southgate submitting his application for the role. The 54-year-old is reportedly eager to return to the sidelines after stepping down as England manager last summer.

Southgate left his England post following a heartbreaking Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. While initially stating he would take at least a year off from coaching, Southgate now appears ready to reenter international football, this time with a new challenge in Poland.

According to Przeglad Sportowy, Southgate has gone as far as personally expressing his interest in the Polish job, showing a clear willingness to lead the squad into the next stage of its development.

Poland are currently in flux after former coach Michal Probierz resigned amid controversy. His decision followed Robert Lewandowski’s announcement that he would not play for the national team while Probierz remained in charge, after being replaced as captain by Piotr Zielinski.

Probierz, who was appointed in September 2023, led Poland through a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, finishing bottom of their group. He later admitted that stepping down was the best move for the team’s stability and future.

Following the resignation, Poland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Finland in a World Cup qualifier, adding urgency to their managerial search ahead of a clash with the Netherlands on September 4.

Southgate, who had previously ruled out a quick return to management, seems to have had a change of heart. Though once linked with Manchester United, he had stressed the need for rest after leading England for eight years.

Now, with the opportunity to guide a new national project and restore order to a divided squad, Southgate is being seriously considered by the Polish FA. His experience in navigating tournament pressure and handling top-level squads could prove vital for a team needing direction and unity.
