Jonny Evans has officially retired from football, becoming the third major departure from Manchester United this summer. The 37-year-old played his final match in United colours during the club’s post-season friendly in Asia, helping Ruben Amorim’s side come from behind to defeat the Hong Kong national team.
Evans’ decision marks the end of a remarkable two-spell journey at Old Trafford. Breaking into the first team under Sir Alex Ferguson during the 2007–08 season, Evans stepped up following Gerard Piqué’s return to Barcelona and played a key role during Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic’s absences. His breakthrough came during the 2010–11 campaign, and he would go on to win three Premier League titles, two League Cups, and the Champions League with the club.
Following Ferguson’s departure, Evans found himself out of favour under Louis van Gaal, who sold him in 2015 along with fellow academy graduate Danny Welbeck. Evans then spent three years at West Brom before joining Leicester City in 2018, where he became a regular starter until his release in 2023.
Rejoining United on a short-term deal last summer, Evans provided vital cover during a defensive injury crisis, even starting the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. Amorim praised the veteran defender’s professionalism and influence, particularly his guidance for younger players during training sessions.
In total, Evans made 241 appearances for Manchester United, scoring eight goals and assisting seven. His retirement comes as part of a broader transition at Old Trafford, with Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof also leaving the club this summer at the end of their contracts.
Eriksen, who netted a penalty in his final Old Trafford appearance, shared a heartfelt farewell with fans and teammates, thanking them for the support and memories made during his three-year spell.
As United prepares for the upcoming season, these departures signal a shift in focus, with Amorim expected to reshape the squad in the months ahead.
