Roy Keane blasts Maresca for patronising Manchester United

Chelsea edged past Manchester United with a 1-0 win on Friday night at Stamford Bridge, continuing United’s dismal league form and pushing Enzo Maresca’s side closer to a Champions League place. Marc Cucurella’s 71st-minute strike was the difference, leaving United winless in their last eight Premier League games — a first in their history.

The defeat marks another unwanted milestone for United, who have now failed to secure back-to-back Premier League victories at any point this season. They sit 16th in the table, with little to show for a campaign that has lacked consistency and cohesion.

Roy Keane, reacting to the result, turned his frustration toward Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. He was unimpressed by Maresca’s post-match remarks, interpreting them as patronising towards both United and their manager, Ruben Amorim. Keane claimed Maresca’s praise for United’s aggressive play was more condescending than complimentary.

Maresca had acknowledged that United’s man-to-man pressing caught Chelsea by surprise, admitting he hadn’t seen such an approach in his analysis of previous matches. But for Keane, this sounded more like a dismissal masked as praise, especially given that United had managed only a single shot on target all game.

Beyond the tactical commentary, Keane raised broader concerns about the state of Manchester United. He argued that the team lacks any clear strength — not in fitness, technical skill, set-pieces, or style of play — and suggested that the club no longer carries the appeal it once had for top talent.

Keane also criticized the emotional state of the club, pointing out a perceived lack of anger or urgency among players, fans, and even the manager. He described the current mood as one of resignation rather than frustration, a dangerous sign for a club of United’s stature.

Reflecting on the current culture at Old Trafford, Keane noted that the roles have reversed — teams now show United the same casual disregard that United once imposed on others. And unless that mindset changes quickly, Keane warned, the decline could deepen further.
