Jamie Carragher believes that next season could see an unexpected contender join the title race for the Premier League, with Liverpool facing tough competition from the usual giants and a potential surprise threat from Newcastle.

Carragher, reflecting on Liverpool’s dominant league title win under Arne Slot this season, praised the Dutch manager’s remarkable first campaign at Anfield, leading the Reds to their 20th league title with four games to spare. Despite Manchester City and Arsenal’s struggles, Liverpool has been almost flawless, only losing twice in the league.

“Winning the title like this was a massive achievement. No one saw it coming,” Carragher said at the 2025 Women’s Football Awards. “It’s been a fantastic job from both the players and the manager, and now we’re all eager to see how he’ll stamp his authority in the summer.”

Slot’s only major signing in his first window was Federico Chiesa from Juventus, but Carragher expects significant squad changes this summer. “I think we’ll see a more active market for Arne. The club and manager have had time to assess the team, and I anticipate up to six players leaving, with replacements coming in to make Liverpool stronger.”

While Liverpool will no doubt bolster their squad, the former defender warned that the Reds should prepare for a more challenging title race next season, as Manchester City and Arsenal are also likely to strengthen their squads.

However, Carragher highlighted an additional threat: Newcastle United. After a shaky start to the season, Eddie Howe’s side has shown remarkable form and could surprise next year, according to the Liverpool legend. “Newcastle could be the dark horse,” Carragher said. “They’ve shown real quality, like when they beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. With a few key additions, they could really challenge.”

Carragher also expressed optimism for the future of women’s football, co-hosting the 2025 Women’s Football Awards, a night dominated by Chelsea’s latest success in the WSL. He noted how much the sport’s profile has grown, particularly in light of the Lionesses’ success at the 2022 European Championship.

“Women’s football is growing in leaps and bounds. The interest in the Euros was incredible, and with the next tournament on the horizon, I’m sure we’ll see even more excitement.”
