Real Madrid are reportedly targeting Arsenal’s star centre-back William Saliba in the upcoming summer transfer window, with the Spanish giants looking to strengthen their defensive options. The reigning European and Spanish champions are expected to pursue a new central defender at the end of the 2024-25 season, with Saliba emerging as their primary target.

Having faced a shortage of options in defence due to injuries and a lack of new signings, Real Madrid have been left vulnerable at the back. According to reports from The Athletic, Saliba, who has been a key figure in Arsenal’s defence, is at the top of their wish list. It’s also suggested that Real Madrid have maintained a positive relationship with Saliba’s camp ahead of a potential move.

Real Madrid have long admired the 24-year-old French defender, keeping tabs on him even during his time at Saint-Étienne before he made his mark at Arsenal. Losing Saliba would be a significant blow to Mikel Arteta’s side, with the centre-back forming a solid partnership with Gabriel Magalhães, making Arsenal’s defence one of the best in the Premier League.

Saliba has been crucial for Arsenal, helping the team in their recent Premier League title challenges and even playing a role in their 3-0 Champions League quarter-final victory over Real Madrid. His current contract at Arsenal runs until the summer of 2027, after he signed an extension two years ago.

Named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2023 and 2024, Saliba has established himself as one of the world’s top defenders. However, Real Madrid may not rush into a summer move. If Saliba’s price proves too steep, they may look to bide their time, preparing a move for him in 2026 when he has just one year left on his contract or even attempting to land him on a free transfer in 2027.

For now, Arsenal fans can take comfort in the fact that Real Madrid are also eyeing other defensive targets, such as AFC Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen. However, Madrid is reportedly hesitant to pay his £50m release clause, and Huijsen could potentially move to a Premier League club like Liverpool instead. Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola remains calm about Huijsen’s future, praising his focus and commitment despite the speculation.
