Paul Merson has cast serious doubt on Arsenal’s ability to secure a trophy this season, urging patience with Mikel Arteta despite their struggles. The Gunners, who last lifted a major title with the FA Cup in 2020, have once again seen their silverware hopes take a hit.
After a strong start to the campaign, Arsenal’s recent form has been disappointing. They suffered an FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester United and endured a crushing 4-0 aggregate defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Meanwhile, in the Premier League, they trail Liverpool by six points, a gap that could widen when the Reds play their game in hand against Everton.
Merson, speaking on Sky Sports, believes Arsenal have let a golden opportunity slip. He pointed out that Manchester City’s inconsistency this season should have allowed Arsenal to capitalize, but instead, Liverpool have taken control.
“They’ve got two chances left, but one could be gone by Wednesday,” Merson said. “If Liverpool beat Everton, they’ll be nine points clear. Arsenal would need Liverpool to lose four games, which I just don’t see happening.”
The Champions League remains Arsenal’s other shot at glory, but Merson is skeptical. Their recent collapse against Newcastle raised concerns, and he believes tougher challenges lie ahead in Europe.
“I thought they had a chance, but after watching them struggle against Newcastle, I’m not convinced. There are much better teams in the Champions League,” he added.
Despite his concerns, Merson warned against sacking Arteta, arguing that even if Arsenal finish second in the Premier League again, stability is crucial.
Arsenal’s next challenge is a crucial league clash against Leicester City. They have performed well in the Champions League, winning six of eight games and finishing third in the group stage behind Liverpool and Barcelona. In the last-16, they will face the winner of either Feyenoord vs. AC Milan or Juventus vs. PSV Eindhoven.
With the season entering its decisive phase, Arsenal must be near-perfect if they want to stay in contention for silverware.
