Chelsea captain Reece James is expected to be sidelined for around three months after undergoing successful knee surgery, dealing another injury blow to the Blues under manager Xabi Alonso.

The 26-year-old sustained the injury during training last Friday, shortly before Chelsea’s 5-1 home victory over Bournemouth. Following medical assessments, the club confirmed on Friday morning that James had undergone minor knee surgery, although no official return date has been established.

Despite the procedure being described as minor, the expected recovery period means the England international could remain unavailable until 2027. His absence represents a setback for Chelsea, with the defender having hoped to build momentum following the international break.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League trip to Everton on Saturday, Alonso expressed his disappointment at the latest injury to his captain while confirming that the operation had been successful.

We are all disappointed for him. He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but in the last training [session] he picked up an injury.

We wanted to be cautious and wait to know the result of the tests, but now the surgery has gone well and has been successful. Keep supporting him.

Alonso also highlighted James’ importance to the squad beyond his contributions on the pitch, insisting that the defender would continue to play a role around the team during his rehabilitation.

He’ll be close to the team – he’s a great influence. I wish him the best recovery. We don’t set timelines, but he will be out for several weeks.

The manager’s comments suggest Chelsea will take a cautious approach to James’ recovery rather than committing to a specific comeback date. With the captain expected to miss an extended period, the club will need to manage his absence while ensuring he has sufficient time to regain full fitness.

Chelsea transfer plans remain unchanged

James’ injury has also raised questions about whether Chelsea could reconsider their recruitment plans ahead of the January transfer window.

However, Alonso indicated that the setback would not necessarily change the club’s current strategy, explaining that Chelsea still expect their captain to return around the anticipated period.

No, I don’t think so because we expect for that time that he’s back – some weeks before, some weeks [gestures other side] so let’s see, it’s not exact the timeline with him, so it doesn’t affect [transfer plans]

Alonso said when asked whether the injury would influence January recruitment.

Chelsea will therefore continue assessing their options without automatically treating James’ absence as a reason to pursue another signing.

The projected three-month absence could see James miss several important matches during the coming months, including Premier League encounters against Liverpool and Manchester City.

His versatility, leadership and experience make him an important figure in Chelsea’s squad, and Alonso will need to consider alternative options while the captain recovers.

For James, the priority will be completing his rehabilitation and returning without risking another setback. Although the surgery has been successful, Chelsea have made clear that no precise comeback date has been set.

The Blues will now hope their captain can make a full recovery and return to action in 2027, providing a boost for the second half of the campaign.
