Despite seeing his side eliminated by Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the Olympics 2028 qualifiers, Comoros head coach Youssouf Abdallah chose to focus on the positives, describing the two-legged encounter as a valuable learning experience for his team.

Speaking during the post-match press conference in Ikenne, Ogun State, Abdallah praised his players for their effort and determination against one of Africa’s strongest women’s national teams.

Rather than dwelling on the result, the Comoros coach emphasized the progress his side made throughout the qualification campaign.

“We didn’t lose, but we learned.”

For Abdallah, competing against the Super Falcons provided an important benchmark for his players and highlighted areas where the team can continue to improve.

“In these two matches, we stayed as long as possible against one of the best teams in Africa. We will keep growing from that.”

Lessons From Facing Africa’s Finest

The Comoros coach admitted that Nigeria’s quality ultimately made the difference across both legs, but he was encouraged by certain aspects of his team’s performance.

He pointed to periods during the matches where Comoros showed resilience and discipline against a side packed with experienced international players.

“Facing a very good Nigerian team, I will retain the positive things from our performances and continue building on them.”

Abdallah also explained that his players were forced to take greater risks in the second leg as they searched for goals, leaving spaces that Nigeria successfully exploited.

With the Super Falcons attacking at pace and taking advantage of those gaps, Comoros found it difficult to contain the hosts as the match progressed.

Praise for Nigeria’s Hospitality

Beyond the football, Abdallah reserved special praise for the reception his delegation received during their stay in Nigeria.

The coach described the visit as one of the most positive experiences of his team’s journey and thanked the hosts for making them feel welcome.

“It is a truly beautiful experience to come to Nigeria.”

He was particularly appreciative of the organisation and treatment given to the Comoros contingent.

“The reception was simply perfect. I salute your country because the welcome was extraordinary.”

Building for the Future

Although disappointed to fall short of qualification, Abdallah believes the experience will benefit women’s football in Comoros in the long run.

For him, playing against a team of Nigeria’s calibre represents an important step in the development of his players and the growth of the sport back home.

“Whatever happens, matches like this help us improve and continue developing.”

Looking Ahead

The defeat ends Comoros’ Olympics 2028 qualifying journey, but Abdallah remains optimistic about the future.

The coach believes the lessons learned against the Super Falcons can serve as a foundation for future growth as the nation continues to strengthen its women’s football programme.

While Nigeria progresses to the next stage of qualification, Comoros leaves with valuable experience, renewed motivation, and the belief that competing against Africa’s elite will help raise their level in the years ahead.
