Real Madrid have confirmed that Raúl Asencio will undergo surgery after suffering a stress fracture in his tibia, dealing another setback to the defender’s season.
The Spanish centre-back has been managing the injury for some time, with reports previously indicating that the problem affected his right tibia. The latest development means Asencio will now require surgery, with his return expected in 2027.
Asencio’s injury comes after a difficult period for the 23-year-old, who has also faced uncertainty over his position in the Real Madrid squad. His future at the Santiago Bernabéu was a major talking point during the summer after the arrival of Ibrahima Konaté increased competition for places in central defence.
According to reports citing Marca, Asencio received three proposals during the summer, including approaches from Premier League clubs Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as another offer from Turkey. However, his injury ultimately ended the possibility of a move away from Madrid.
Softfootball understands that Asencio had been open to considering his options as Real Madrid weighed potential offers, particularly with the defender facing a battle for regular playing time. Reports had also suggested that the club were prepared to consider either a loan or permanent departure.
For now, however, the transfer speculation has been replaced by a lengthy rehabilitation process. Asencio’s immediate priority will be recovering fully from the tibia problem before returning to competitive football.
His expected comeback in 2027 means Real Madrid will have to manage their defensive options carefully while the academy graduate works his way back to full fitness.
