Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle and forward Moses Simon addressed the media after Nigeria opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Madagascar stunned the home crowd by taking an early lead, but Nigeria responded strongly to turn the game around. George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor both scored on their competitive debuts for the Super Eagles as Nigeria claimed all three points.
Speaking after the match Softfootball Media gathered, Chelle acknowledged that his side did not deliver a complete performance but was pleased with the players’ response to the early setback. The French coach said the team maintained a positive mentality and showed commitment to the national shirt throughout the contest.
Nigeria were also forced to find a way through a disciplined Madagascar defence that spent long periods sitting deep. Chelle explained that the visitors’ compact approach made it difficult to create spaces, prompting him to alter Nigeria’s shape and provide greater width in attack.
The coach said the tactical adjustment was aimed at stretching Madagascar and creating opportunities from the flanks, while also encouraging his players to recognise and respond to situations on the pitch themselves.
Chelle also highlighted the togetherness within the Super Eagles camp, particularly the way experienced players have helped the newer members of the squad settle into the team. According to the coach, the welcoming attitude of the senior players has made it easier for the newcomers to adapt to international football.
The coach also provided an explanation for Samuel Chukwueze’s second-half substitution, describing the decision as tactical. Chelle wanted to introduce additional energy and players capable of challenging Madagascar’s defenders in one-on-one situations.
With the opening qualifier now behind them, Chelle has already shifted his attention to Nigeria’s next assignment against Guinea-Bissau. He said the Super Eagles will review the Madagascar match, identify areas that need improvement and prepare for a different test on the road.
For Moses Simon, the evening carried an added significance as the experienced winger celebrated his 100th appearance for Nigeria. The milestone came on a night when the Super Eagles secured an important opening victory in their AFCON qualifying campaign.
Simon described reaching a century of international appearances as a major privilege and a moment he once never expected to experience. He also thanked the coaches, teammates, supporters and members of the media who have accompanied him throughout his career with the national team.
Asked about his plans for future appearances, Simon left the decision to God and the national team coach, choosing to focus on continuing to contribute whenever he is called upon.
Nigeria will now turn their attention to Guinea-Bissau as Chelle looks to build on the comeback victory while addressing the areas that required improvement against Madagascar.
