Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that Richarlison will remain out of his plans despite being available for selection, including for the Carabao Cup.
De Zerbi made the decision clear ahead of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool, insisting that the Brazilian forward will not be involved while the current situation between the player and the club remains unresolved.
“Richarlison will NOT play even if he’s available. Not even in the Carabao Cup, no,”
De Zerbi said.
The manager explained that Richarlison’s situation has not changed following his omission from Tottenham’s Premier League squad. Although the striker is eligible to feature in cup competitions, De Zerbi has chosen not to select him.
“Richarlison, you already know everything and nothing changes for Carabao Cup or Premier League. The situation is the same,” the Italian added.
Softfootball understands that Tottenham are now facing an increasingly complicated situation after Richarlison rejected a proposed move to Vasco da Gama. The Brazilian club had explored a deal, but negotiations broke down, leaving the 29-year-old at Spurs despite his desire for a change of scenery.
Richarlison has consequently been left out of Tottenham’s 25-man Premier League squad and could remain on the sidelines until the January transfer window. The situation is particularly significant given Tottenham’s attacking problems, with the club yet to score in their opening four Premier League matches this season.
De Zerbi’s decision means Richarlison’s strong record against Liverpool will not be enough to earn him a return to the squad, despite Tottenham’s need for attacking options.
For now, both player and club appear locked in an uncomfortable stand-off, with the January window potentially offering the next opportunity for a resolution.
