West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray has expressed his disappointment after Semi Ajayi suffered another injury setback, admitting the experienced defender will be a big miss for the Championship club.
Ajayi had only recently returned from a previous spell on the sidelines before sustaining a hamstring injury during West Brom’s 2-0 victory over Oxford United.
The Nigerian international was forced off before halftime, and the club has since confirmed he will spend several weeks in rehabilitation. Softfootball reports that the latest setback has dealt another blow to the Baggies’ defensive options.
Speaking ahead of West Brom’s clash with Leeds United, Mowbray praised Ajayi’s qualities, highlighting his pace and confidence in one-on-one situations. The manager believes the defender’s mobility allows the team to play with a higher defensive line and maintain greater control during matches.
While wishing the 31-year-old a speedy recovery, Mowbray said:
It’s disappointing and frustrating for him and for us.
Ajayi has made 14 Championship appearances this season, and his absence will force West Brom to rely on other defensive options as they continue their push for promotion during the closing stages of the campaign.
