Wayne Rooney has stepped down as manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle after both parties agreed to end their partnership, Softfootball reports.
The former Manchester United and England forward leaves the club after a difficult spell in charge, having managed just four league victories while suffering 13 defeats in 23 Championship matches since his appointment in May.
In a farewell statement, Rooney expressed gratitude to the club’s board, coaching staff, players and supporters for their backing during his time at Home Park. He reserved special praise for chairman Simon Hallett, Neil Dewsnip and his coaching team, thanking them for their support throughout his tenure.
Rooney also paid tribute to Plymouth’s supporters, describing the atmosphere at Home Park as unforgettable and promising to continue following the club’s progress from afar.
Plymouth Argyle confirmed the decision in an official statement, thanking Rooney and his backroom staff for their commitment and wishing them success in the future. The Championship club added that an announcement regarding a new first-team manager will be made at a later date.
Rooney’s departure brings an end to another challenging managerial spell as he now considers the next step in his coaching career.
