William Troost-Ekong isn’t hiding behind his individual award. Despite being named Most Valuable Player and collecting a $1,000 prize for his performance, the Super Eagles captain took personal responsibility for the defensive lapses that let Rwanda complete a stunning comeback win on Monday.

Softfootball understands Troost-Ekong singled out Rwanda’s set-piece equalizer as the moment that hurt most, telling reporters:
Yes, you’re right, and I take responsibility. As captain and the last man at the back, I know we should have done better.
But don’t forget, free kicks, like other set-piece situations, can trouble any team, and I think that’s what happened today. So, I take responsibility.
Nigeria’s slack marking again proved costly when Innocent Nshuti found space to score the winner 15 minutes from time.
Reflecting on a missed chance to send fans home happy, Troost-Ekong added:
We set out to win this last game to thank and appreciate our fans for their support. We’ve accepted the outcome and must move forward.
