Ecuador international Marco Angulo has died at the age of 22, just over a month after sustaining serious injuries in a road traffic accident.
Softfootball understands that Angulo passed away on Monday night after spending several weeks in hospital following the crash, which occurred on October 7 in southern Quito, Ecuador.
His club, LDU Quito, confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, expressing condolences to his family and describing his death as an irreparable loss.
According to reports in Ecuador, the midfielder underwent multiple surgeries and spent more than a week in intensive care before eventually succumbing to his injuries.
Angulo was on loan at LDU Quito from Major League Soccer side FC Cincinnati, having joined the Ecuadorian club in March 2024 with an option to make the move permanent.
FC Cincinnati also paid tribute to the young midfielder, saying the club was devastated by the news of his passing.
The talented midfielder featured 16 times for LDU Quito, with his final appearance coming on October 6, just one day before the fatal accident.
Angulo made his senior debut for Ecuador in November 2022, earning three international caps after coming off the bench in a goalless draw against Iraq.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation described him as not only an outstanding footballer but also a valued teammate whose warmth and professionalism left a lasting impression on everyone who worked with him.
Reports also confirmed that Independiente del Valle player Roberto Cabezas and a friend, Víctor Carcopa, lost their lives in the same accident. Two other passengers were reportedly in the vehicle, although their condition has not been disclosed.
The football community has continued to pay tribute to Angulo, whose promising career was tragically cut short at just 22 years of age.
