Jorge Jesus has accepted the role of Portugal’s new head coach and is set to succeed Roberto Martínez following the nation’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced Portuguese manager will lead the Seleção into a new era, with his project set to cover the UEFA Nations League, Euro 2028 and the next FIFA World Cup.

Jesus arrives after guiding Al Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title, where he worked closely with Cristiano Ronaldo during a successful domestic campaign.

Softfootball understands that The appointment follows Roberto Martínez’s decision to step down after Portugal’s Round of 16 elimination to Spain. The Spaniard announced his resignation after the 1-0 defeat, stating that the national team needed a “new voice” to lead its next chapter. His departure also coincided with the expiry of his contract after the tournament.

Portugal will now look to Jorge Jesus to build on the current squad and guide the national team back into contention for major international honours.
