Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has returned to Italy for treatment after sustaining a hamstring injury during Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Libya.

Softfootball understands that Chukwueze’s early return to Italy is a precautionary measure to allow AC Milan’s medical team to properly assess the extent of the injury. The setback means the winger will miss Nigeria’s return leg against Libya as both club and country prioritize his recovery.

Chukwueze came on as a substitute for Frank Onyeka in the 61st minute of the Matchday Three encounter.

The 25-year-old nearly registered an assist after setting up Ademola Lookman, but the forward’s effort was controversially ruled out for offside.

However, the former Villarreal winger suffered a hamstring injury towards the closing stages of the fiercely contested match.

As a result, Chukwueze did not travel with the rest of the Super Eagles squad to Benghazi for Tuesday’s reverse fixture.

He will now undergo further medical examinations with AC Milan to determine the severity of the injury and the length of time he could be sidelined.

The Super Eagles will face the Mediterranean Knights in Benina on Tuesday, knowing that a victory will secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
