Manchester City are reportedly leading the race to sign Elliot Anderson, with a major financial proposal being prepared for the Nottingham Forest midfielder, Softfootball reports.

The renewed push follows reports from March that City planned to strengthen midfield during the summer transfer window regardless of how the season ended. At the time, Anderson had already emerged as one of the top options under consideration for Pep Guardiola.

According to updates shared by Fabrizio Romano on his official X handle, Manchester United remain attentive and ready to move if City’s deal fails to materialize. However, talks with Forest are said to be at an early stage with no final breakthrough yet reached.

Romano revealed:

Manchester City are prepared to make a very important financial proposal to Elliot Anderson, leading the race as revealed since March. Manchester United still attentive and keen if Man City deal won’t happen. Nothing advanced with Forest yet.

Anderson has attracted growing interest after impressive performances in Forest’s midfield. Known for his energy, ball-carrying ability, and tactical versatility, the 23-year-old has developed into one of the most highly rated domestic midfielders in the league.

His rise has also drawn attention from Arsenal and Chelsea, showing how competitive the battle could become if Nottingham Forest open the door to a sale.

Despite the transfer speculation, Anderson has recently made it clear that his current focus is on international duty with the England national football team and the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. He indicated that all club matters are secondary for now.

For City, Anderson would represent a younger midfield option suited to Guardiola’s technical demands. For United, his availability could become more attractive if rivals fail to complete a move quickly.

The coming weeks may determine whether one of the summer’s biggest domestic transfer battles truly begins.
